EXPECTATIONS FOR ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

I expect every one of you to act in an honorable way.  My specific expectations are:

1.    FOR ALL WRITTEN WORK, I encourage you to discuss concepts and problems with others so that you can achieve a better understanding of the material, but any written work, including homework, that you submit for grading must be your own, whether handwritten or typed.  In order to avoid even the appearance that you have copied another’s work, write your assignments on your own, after you’ve finished discussing the assignment and have moved to an independent workspace.

2.    FOR LAB REPORTS SPECIFICALLY, I expect you to share data and observations, and to discuss the lab results with your lab partner(s); but each student must write his/her own report (answers to questions, analysis and conclusions, graphs, etc.)  With the sole exception of data and observations, it is unacceptable for any student to copy a partner’s or any other student’s report.  In order to avoid even the appearance that you have copied another’s work, write your lab reports on your own, after you’ve finished discussing the assignment and have moved to an independent workspace.

3.    IN A TESTING SITUATION, you will write your own answers, without using any notes, pre-programmed calculators, or the like, unless you have been given expressed permission from me to use such resources.  You will not look at another student’s paper during the test.  You will not knowingly allow another student to look at your paper.  You will not discuss the test with, or within earshot of, members of another class who have not yet taken the test.  This includes electronic communications.  You will not ask other students for information about a test that you have not yet taken.

4.    WHEN IN DOUBT, ask me for clarification of my expectations before you do something that may call your integrity into question.

CONSEQUENCES:

If you fail to meet the above expectations there will be consequences, depending on
the severity of your failure.  These consequences will range from a warning, to a zero on the
assignment in question, to further disciplinary action from the Judiciary Committee.  I will
report all incidents of your failure to meet these expectations to the Dean of Students, who
will follow up with appropriate disciplinary measures.
