Please arrive to class on time and prepared for the day. You are responsible for bringing to class the following materials: textbook, completed homework assignment, pencil, blue or black pen, paper, calculator, and a folder or notebook to hold all materials. Your semester and final exams will be cumulative, so it would be wise to keep all of your work together throughout the year.
Homework:
All homework assignments are posted on the website and are expected to be complete by the class period after they are assigned. For example, the homework assignment listed under Day 1 of a given week is due in class on Day 2. After a few minutes spent discussing and answering questions about the homework, I will roll a single, six-sided die. If the die comes up 1 or 2, there will be a brief homework quiz on which you will be graded for correctness. If it comes up 3 or 4, your homework assignment will be collected and graded for effort. If it comes up 5 or 6, homework will not be graded that day. You are expected to use complete sentences when asked to explain or describe, and must show your work clearly for any calculations. For fill in the blank or yes/no type questions, a short answer will suffice. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED for credit, although it is always in your best interest to complete all assigned work in order to master the subject.
Labs:
You will be assigned a lab period, either Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, based on your availability and our desire to balance the sections. Once you have been assigned to a lab period, it is important that you always come to lab on that day. Attendance will be taken, and forgetting your lab day will result in a deduction on your lab grade for that week. If you are absent from school on your lab day, you must make arrangements to complete the lab during one of the other two designated lab periods. It is never permissible to skip an art class in order to make up a science lab. Do not schedule routine doctor appointments during your lab period. Making up a lab is always very inconvenient and sometimes impossible; missing more than one lab per semester will result in negative consequences.
Lab handouts will generally be given to you in class on Mondays. Before attending your assigned lab session, you should read the lab in its entirety, including all analysis questions. You should also complete any prelab portions before you attend the lab. The postlab analysis will be due in class on the following Tuesday at the BEGINNING of class. LATE LAB REPORTS will receive an automatic 50% deduction in grade.
Absences:
It is your responsibility to catch up on missed work in a timely manner following an absence. You can access homework assignments via the website or you can call or email your instructor for any information. You will have a grace period for missed work equal to the number of days you are absent. Now that you are a sophomore, there is a raised expectation for you to take the initiative in making up all missed work, including tests and labs. Missing either a lab or a test is quite serious and should happen only when it is absolutely unavoidable. The first makeup test will be given without penalty; subsequent makeup tests will be accompanied by a 10% penalty.
